Hong Kong — Twenty thousand Hong Kong residents rang in the New Year by paying homage to singer Anita Mui, who died at the age of 40, after a battle with cancer.

Shortly before midnight on Wednesday, pop stars Joey Yung and Kelly Chen led a mass sing-along of Mui's greatest hits at Hong Kong's Times Square, as a giant screen flashed images of the late star.

Mui died early Tuesday morning film star Jackie Chan and actress Michelle Yeoh at her bedside.

Mui shot to fame in the 1980s with such hits as Homecoming. Her penchant for makeovers drew comparisons to Madonna.

She also had a successful acting career, winning Taiwan's Golden Horse award for best actress in 1987 for her portrayal of a tormented ghost in the movie Rouge.
