Finally, what is so depressing about the Hodson-Archer Nijinsky reconstructions is their indifference to dance as an autonomous art form, with its own logic. If Stravinsky's score for "The Rite of Spring" had been lost, would Hodson and Archer deduce it from the set design? If there was no trace of the set design, would they reconstruct it from the score? If not, then how can dance be derived from non-dance evidence? Hodson, in her 1996 book, "Nijinsky's Crime Against Grace," says that for a long section of "The Rite"—a circle dance for the women—she had the floor pattern and the timing. She was missing only one thing: "How do the maidens walk? The exact step is not recorded." The exact step—in other words, the choreography.
