Glutter's Hong Kong
I don't know who leaked this. Whoever it is. That person made a huge and immediate impact.
I would like to shake your hand one day.
Original Press Release: Yahoo Provided Information that jailed Chinese journalist.
Two nights ago, I answered a list of questions about Internet Law, Privacy Policy, ISPs in Hong Kong, China and Hong Kong Business Legalities and whether Yahoo! Hong Kong and Yahoo! China shared the same management. (It's probably not things people expect me to know but I do.)
While my friend Na*im did some server locating and told me everything he knows about hosts and servers as well as HK privacy law.
I followed it up with a few more phone calls, messenger convos and more research to cross check information. Then at about 2am I sent it off and i went to bed.
Today I got an email from someone who said he saw the story on the front page of Financial Times European Edition....
Then I thought I would search for a similar story on the news feeds to post on Glutter...
344 articles around the world so far and counting.
I hope this story makes a difference, as much is needed for a wide
spread acknowledgement that the backbone of Internet Censorship in
China is provided by American Technology, American Companies and hence
American Capital. Not to mention, hopefully this prevents another
dissident lulled into a false sense of security because they are using
"foreign" service and email providers.
Julien from RSF suggested I put my participation up on here:
He said, "You did a great job Yan. Your help was Essential and Quick. You can Quote me on your Blog."
I appreciate receiving the suggestion and permission because otherwise I would not have thought it appropiate. It's nice to be able to record it for myself as this is surely one of the most important things I have participated in to date.
A few years ago, part of my job included acting as a censor blocking the news of the 10th Anniversary of the 1989 Student Democratic Movement and its subsequent crackdown to be discussed or read about on China.com and HongKong.com. It took me five months to quit and five years to blow the whistle, and even after all that time it took ounces of courage.
I don't know who leaked this. Whoever it is. That person made a huge and immediate impact.
Good Luck.
I hope I get to shake your hand one day.

Yahoo HK's involvement makes me wonder is HK running on a one country one system now?
Christian Science Monitor puts it well:
"Legally, Yahoo is not obligated to cooperate with Chinese police. Yet in practice it may have to. Unanswered so far are the terms by which Yahoo Hong Kong, operating under the "one country two systems" formula that allows autonomy, was forced to conform to Chinese requests, despite its Hong Kong registry."

PS.
As for the CSM thing, the question is not whether it was "forced" to coopertating. I am sure it was not, but its more a simple matter of proceedure.
All ISPs will do the same thing.
But they need to be held accountable for such behavior, which is why getting the news out and swaying public opinions on such matters is so very important.

Good stuff!
Saw this in the FT on Thursday in our Barcelona office, actually got a mention in the office there which is more than I could say for the UK. I find more and more in the corporate culture, particularly on the US side there is less and less concern for morality, and people are reticent to raise their heads above the parapet about morally questionable business operations.
My company has just been put through an ethics training course as part of a DOJ/SEC settlement. When I raised the issue of whether we should be doing new business with a large tobacco company, there was an uncomfortable silence in the room and the executive lead looked at his shoes and coughed. I think it is so ingrained now that things like this are done without thinking them through and it really behoves people to keep tabs on organisations to bring them up to scratch.
